The pictures in the National Gallery website are often not the same as the ones I have.  Notice the circus-like tent or pavilion to the right of the picture.  Some of the striped markers are still visible but the rifle pits have been filled in.   The bodies at Gettysburg were a serious problem for the
residents, especially the many dead horses that had to be buried.
